Berlin Scene

All dressed up and nowhere to go? A good place to start looking is the local gay mag Siegessäule - it also has a good website which enables you to plan your stay and pack the right gear......Another good website is berlin.gay-web.de. More listings and a downloadable map can be found here.

Many bars have regular theme and party nights and although I’ll try to list the main ones, always check with the bar first!

As in many European cities, the bars don’t usually get busy until about 11.30. One of the first ones to go to is Scheune. Hand your coats over the bar and they will keep them for you for free! (keep your ticket to claim them back). Most people stand towards the back of the bar by some steps which lead down to the darkroom.......The bar is usually busy so you should enjoy yourselves. On Sunday afternoons it’s “naked sex party”. Entry from 1730-1830. Later the same night New Action do the same (from 2100)

Next, it’s up to you! There’s Mutschmanns and Toms which one of my friends like so much he usually “gets lost” and then falls out of the front door at about 7 am! I don’t like it. Most people end up at New Action. If you’re still desperate there is always the 24 hour bar: Armstrong. I met the owner once:

He’s a bit mad and you wouldn’t believe the bar but I think it’s harmless, once you get over the scared bit! He wanted to move to England and become the slave of one of my friends......

All the bars will look after your coat (Mutschmann’s charge €1 -they and Armstrong have a separate coat check - in the others you hand your coat over at the bar)
