There is no shortage of accommodation in Gran Canaria but what type do you want? Hotel, bungalow, gay, straight, cheap, expensive?
I think I’ve done all options now and until recently the preferred option was a complex of bungalows for gay men only, near the Yumbo centre. There are a number of options available:
Paso Chico
Club Mancha
Club Tucanes
Villas Blancas
Basement
Vista Bonita.
The accommodation is usually the same – basic kitchen, smallish lounge, bedroom with, usually, two single beds that need pushing together, maid service when it comes, small, thin towels, pay as you view tv, enough hot water for 1.5 showers. Over the last few years however some signs of improvement have been seen – the kettle in the kitchen, DVD players etc.
There are advantages though – sex with your neighbours, staggering distance from Yumbo and they’re usually cheap (although still more expensive than their straight equivalents). Remember the straight versions are usually very gay friendly and you won’t have any problems but don’t forget those heterosexual accessories - children. While you’re having your disco nap , they’ll be running round screaming, in and out of the pool. And the straights don’t often take kindly to the sounds of someone being fisted at 4 in the morning. There again, nor do I if I’m trying to sleep.
So until recently we’ve slummed it with the rest of them, happy where we were. Then the newsletter arrived. Sheraton Hotels, my preferred chain, were building a luxury spa complex in the south of the Island. I’m lucky enough to have Gold status with them, although I used to have Platinum which was even better. Virtually everytime I stay in a Sheraton I get upgraded and even if you don’t you be can sure of a luxurious time.
