Now transferred to Gran Canaria from Madrid for Gay Pride Maspalomas. Went out after midnight on the first night, Yumbo was heaving but Cellarbar wasn’t too bad.
This is a sex bar where the theme is either underwear or jockstraps or naked. Naked is acceptable every night. You pay €5 on the door which includes a bag to put your clothes and a free drink. You head to the left to get undressed and return to the door to hand over your bag, get a wrist tag with your number on and a voucher for your free drink (go for a long drink, e.g vodka and a mixer to get best value). Then enjoy. There is a darkroom with various cubicles at the back but I tend to stay in the bar and get my fun there, as I don’t like the dark! For smokers there is a smoking area.
Remember that the gay life in Spain starts late. After a couple of hours “disco napping” we hit the streets. We’d decided to wear coats as it was a bit chilly. Most of Madrid’s gay life is in the Chueca area. The Patroc guide seems up-to-date and accurate or see my Madrid gay page. A reasonable hotel in the area is the Best Western Arosa, just off Gran Via but therefore noisy. A must if you missed the 70s fashion fad for avocado bathroom suites. First stop was the Eagle. A small bar, with an entry fee of €5 each, which included a beer and cloakroom. Bar is on the left hand side and the dark room and toilets are upstairs. Darkroom is small with not much activity when we were there. Next stop: Leather which is just up the road from the Eagle. At this bar you have to tell the man on the door what drink you want and your admission is charged accordingly (including coatcheck). Again, a small bar but the darkroom is bigger and was busier (it’s at the back on the ground floor). The bar is more modern/industrial compared to the older-looking traditional bar of the Eagle. Finally we moved onto Odarko, once we found it - the streets are small, short and don’t always show on maps - make sure you know where you’re going! Entrance was a step €10 each so we made the most of it and ordered vodkas! No coatcheck which was annoying. Drinks areas upstairs with the darkrooms downstairs.
